Q-switched Nd:YAG Lasers

Principle

A special operating mode of this key-down or CW laser is the so called Q-switch. The beam path is optically blocked by an active element (the Q-switch). The continuously created pumping energy is buffered by the laser active crystal.
When the optical blockade is reversed resp. the course of beam is opened, all saved energy will be delivered within a very short pulse. Afterwards, the optical path is closed again. This process is repeated continuously with frequencies of cw to 200,000 Hz, whereas the pulse lengths may vary between 10 and 1,000 ns. With these short pulses top performances can be reached that are more than a 1000 times higher than the CW laser power.
